On Saturday, January 21, 2017, friends and I proudly joined a group of 15,000 people for the Tucson Women’s March, which was held in conjunction with Women’s March on Washington. It has been estimated that around 4 million people participated in Women’s Marches in the United States alone, and close to 300,000 outside of this country (according to numbers gathered by professors at the Universities of Connecticut and Denver).
People marched for many reasons, including a show of solidarity against the new president’s agenda. The reasons are detailed in a Yes! magazine article and outlined below:
1. Health care and reproductive rights
2. Racial justice
3. Families and education
4. Equality and respect
5. Religious freedom and xenophobia
6. Gender-based violence
7. LGBTQIA rights
8. Immigration rights
9. Gun control
10. Environmental justice
