Alastair and I, with friends Michael and Paul Verdu, and their friends Jen and Joseph, joined hundreds of enthusiastic people at the La Jolla Cove Swim Club Annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge. It was a beautiful sunny day, with both water and air temperatures around 60 F. Spectacularly better conditions than three years ago, when water was 57 and air was 55, and the fog was so thick you couldn’t see the shore once you were in the water past the breakers! I didn’t do any cold water training this year, so I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to stay in long, but I swam for 30 minutes, exceeding my 2012 time by five minutes. Felt great after the initial cold shock! Definitely a fun and stimulating way to start the New Year!
CBS 8 did a news report on the swim, which I appear in twice, and Alastair, Jen and Joseph can be seen briefly. In the video clip at 00:39, I’m the woman in the dark suit coming out of the water through the waves, to the right of the guy being interviewed (a little above the woman behind him who’s wearing the orange swim cap). Then, at 00:45, there’s a shot of me from behind going into the water (black suit, red trim, white/black swim cap). Alastair, Jen and Joseph can be seen in the water on the right at 01:02. Great fun!
