113 swimmers gathered just before sunrise at Lake Pleasant in Peoria, Arizona to swim the first of the AZ Open Water Swim series. There were three distances to choose from – 3K, 2K and 1K. I swam the 3000 meter course (1.86 miles). I don’t consider myself a fast swimmer, but I was fairly pleased with the results. There were 6 females in the 45+ Masters category, and I came in third with a time of 1:02. I’ll have to get a bit faster before The Great North Swim (for that, I need to complete 3 miles within 2 hours).
The water temperature was colder than last year (60F today, almost 70F the previous year). I didn’t wear a wet suit for the 2K last year, but did today. Since wet suits are required for The Great North Swim, I need to practice wearing one in cold water, and in a competitive environment with other swimmers.
I just signed up for the second in the AZ OWS series at Bartlett Lake, which will be on April 30. I’ll be swimming the 4K at that event. I have my work cut out for me this month!
