“Windermere is England’s largest lake at 10.5 miles long (17km), stretching from Ambleside in the North to Newby Bridge in the South,” per the Great North Swim web site. The swim took place over three days, June 10 – 12, and about 10,000 swimmers participated. There were multiple distance options for swimmers: 1/2 mile, 1 mile, 2 mile, 5K and 10K.

I did the 5K on Friday at 2pm, and thankfully we had great weather. The water temperature was a surprisingly warm 21C and air temperature was about the same.  My official finish time was 1:32:29, which is about what I expected.  What I didn’t expect was placing first in my age group for females over all the 5K events!

I was very glad the event fit into our summer travel plans to the UK – thoroughly enjoyed it!
